Primary School (5-10 years)
The primary school serves as the initial stage of formal education for children, typically ranging from ages 5 or 6 to 11 or 12, depending on the educational system and country. Its primary purpose is to lay the groundwork for children's academic, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Curriculum: The curriculum in primary school usually focuses on basic subjects such as language arts (reading, writing, and speaking), mathematics, science, social studies, and sometimes additional subjects like art, music, physical education, and foreign languages. The curriculum is designed to gradually introduce and build upon fundamental concepts and skills in each subject area.
Secondary School (10-15 years)
In Nigeria, secondary education typically encompasses six years of schooling divided into two main levels: Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS). Here's an explanation of each level: Junior Secondary School (JSS): Duration: The Junior Secondary School phase lasts for three years, usually covering grades 7 to 9. Age Range: Students entering JSS are typically around 11 to 13 years old. Curriculum: The curriculum during the JSS years is designed to provide students with a broad foundation across various subjects. Core subjects often include English language, mathematics, basic science, social studies, and vocational studies. Students may also study additional subjects such as agricultural science, civic education, computer studies, and one or more Nigerian languages. Assessment: Students are assessed through continuous assessment, quizzes, tests, projects, and examinations conducted by the school. The Junior Secondary School Examination (JSSE) or other school-based assessments may be administered at the end of each academic year. Senior Secondary School (SSS): Duration: The Senior Secondary School phase also spans three years, covering grades 10 to 12. Age Range: Students entering SSS are typically around 14 to 16 years old. Curriculum: The Senior Secondary School curriculum builds upon the foundation laid in JSS and offers a more specialized and in-depth study of subjects. Students continue to study core subjects such as English language, mathematics, and civic education, along with elective subjects chosen based on their interests and career aspirations. Elective subjects may include sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics), humanities (e.g., literature in English, economics, history), commercial subjects (e.g., commerce, accounting), and vocational subjects (e.g., technical drawing, home economics). Assessment: Students are assessed through a combination of continuous assessment and external examinations. The Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) or West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), administered by examination bodies such as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or the National Examinations Council (NECO), is a crucial assessment at the end of SSS. The results of these examinations are often used for admission into tertiary institutions or for employment purposes.
